  • Make sure you've each *started* reading your ENG 1102 INDEPENDENT READING, one of the four titles assigned to you in class Thurs. 1/16
    • Just Mercy, Brian Stevenson (NF)
    • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexi (CREATIVE NF/MEMOIR)
    • The Other Wes Moore, Wes Moore (MEMOIR)
    • Educated, Tara Westover (MEMOIR)
NOTE: *STARTED* reading means give your book a chance first! We'll regroup first thing Tuesday, and I know some of in each class with the same title set a *READING AMOUNT,* which is great
  • AND PLEASE REMEMBER "THE DEAL" WITH THIS INDEPENDENT READING VENTURE: 
JUST. READ.

  • Although this really is my ultimate goal, please understand I also am obligated as your YHC ENG 1102 instructor to record grades for you
    • with that in mind, BE READY FIRST THING TUES. 1/21 to assemble into "pods"/groups with like-titles for an OBSERVED/GRADED DISCUSSION TIME regarding your text
    • after this 'first session' of group independent reading discussion, we'll come together and I'll give you my observations, suggestions, and insight regarding how we're doing things; we'll then make adjustments and/or amendments for the next discussion's grading purposes

  • Krieger will be out, so, ABOVE ALL, PLEASE RESPECT THE SUB!
  • REMEMBER that you'll have THE ENTIRE BLOCK FRIDAY to START ON/READ INTO YOUR F451 FINAL READING HW DUE TUES. 1/21 (see details below)

HW DUE TUES. 1/21:

OVER THIS LONG WEEKEND, completely FINISH reading the novel/novella Fahrenheit 451, (all of PART III "Burning Bright")

**NOTE: the novel(la) ends on pp. 158; that's all you're required to read
  • **AND IF NECESSARYNOW. IS. THE. TIME. to CATCH UP with your reading!!! BE PROACTIVE!!! No excuses!!
  • if you'd like, use the 'POST-IT NOTE READING STRATEGY' shown in class to help you with comprehension, organizing your reading/understanding; whatever works best for you!! 
  • be ready for discussion of PART III as well as ALL of F451 overall, and bring questions you may have about the plot and characters as well as the FINAL SCENES of this text
  • **LOOKING AHEAD: BE READY FOR A POTENTIAL READING CHECK/QUIZ  WHEN WE RETURN TUES. 1/21 since you'll be finishing up this book (*PART III*) over the long weekend! 
  • SUGGESTION AS YOU FINISH READING: use your F451 Overview/Background CLASS NOTES from this week in class to look for specific instances/plot points/themes in the novel that help you understand the text (*as well as our previous notes regarding dystopian characteristics)
  • PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR COPY OF F451 TO CLASS EVERY DAY!
