It's been a while, I know. This summer has been...absolutely awesome. Sleeping late, reading, relaxing, sleeping, sleeping some more, shopping, bowling, playing Wii, acting nowhere near my age, actually refusing--yes, you heard me right!--refusing to clean my house, and, most importantly, just plain hanging out with people I really love.
But, now it's back to the big, looming reality that's soon to slap me and about 250 other employees of Union County School system in the face. School starts Friday. I'm numb this year. My last group of kids just graduated; in that, I mean the last group that I've been with since 6th grade just graduated. Gosh, I will reeeally miss them. But, I have ties with many of them outside of school, so I'm positive we'll keep in touch.
This is going to be a challenging year. There are so many obstacles facing teachers in our system this year, and I hate it, but I can't get into the logistics of any of these sticky situations here. Just know we need prayer, as teachers, as a faculty, and as a school community. For the sake of our own sanity and for the kids with whom we are charged.
Here's my pledge for the year--my challenge, if you will, to myself, to live and to remember every single day I stand up in front of the kids in this classroom:
...I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my personal approach that creates the climate. It's my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized....--unknown

Well good luck in being the "decisive element" in the classroom. Unfortunately, I will not be able to experience it, because I don't have you this year. :(
I wish more teachers realized that they set the mood for the classroom. If the teacher is cranky, everybody is walking on eggshells trying not to make him/her angrier. It jsut makes everyone uncomfortable.
Anyway, there's no way I couldn't comment after you whined about not having any comments today. You baby.
Haha. jk. I hate it when I don't get comments too.
So I really want Joey to get a blog. I want to know what is going on in his head.
So, I've realized I'm rambling now. Sorry. I'll stop now.
OMG! Wasn't that the funniest bag ever?
Crap! I did it again.
seriously now. bye.
I'm glad you had a good summer! :)
And yeah, I am definitely keeping faculty in my prayers, really.. I feel sorry for the some of teachers that are kinda in over their head. Not really going to name any names, because that would be pretty mean.
But! I'm glad I get to be in your class, I have a feeling it's going to be fun. I'm excited! :)
a prime example of teachers setting the mood is Mr. Donahue........ you never know what kind of a day it's gonna be in that class. Anyway, just keep on with what you're doing, it's fun and educational.
Steph and I move in to the big YHC next Saturday. Apparently we have some sort of "classes" on sat. and sun. as well. Do you know what's going on with that?
Oh, I stopped by on Friday to drop of some books at the library. I would have said hi but they're pretty gestapo-ish about us outsiders staying away from the student population. You never know, I might influence them with anarchist ideas and they'll take over the school...
Well, ttyl
i was up at the school on monday and saw you in the hallway...i would have gone and said something to you but, like angela, i was afraid of metal bars descending from the ceiling and trapping me in a cell while alarms went off in the background...okay, so that's a little melodramatic, but it's my imagination... i heard mrs. barnes is the new assistant principal. is that right? i never know if peter is making stuff up or not...
how was the first day?
Holy crap, Krieg!!! Remember when I told you how I saw the onion movie at movie gallery? Well, I found it online and I'm watching it right now. It is so freaking hilarious. You should go and watch it. Right now. Just do it.

ps do not ever watch that onion video in class. It is far more vulgar than first I thought. Still funny, though!
