 1st/2nd APLang/ENG 1102

**IMPORTANT x3 HW TASKS TO COMPLETE THIS LONG WEEKEND DUE MON. 2/7:

1) From our time in SMALL-GROUPS today THURS. 2/3 in class, first make sure you complete ALL your x5 assigned THE CRUCIBLE ACT 4 qu's
  • we'll be checking/going over all of these in class MON. 2/7, so make sure you've INDIVIDUALLY (*and THOUGHTFULLY!) completed all you were assigned (**list of qu's on previous HW blog post)
  • **ALSO early next week I'll let you know how to label ALL our The Crucible qu's for a turn-in/completion grade, so MAKE SURE you're keeping them all together

2) Over the long weekend, please take some time to THOUGHTFULLY SELECT A *U.S. RED SCARE or McCARTHYISM* POLITICAL CARTOON/PROPAGANDA POSTER that you will be using next week **for a SIGNIFICANT VISUAL/RHETORICAL ANALYSIS GRADE
  • As we finish up with Miller's The Crucible over the next few classes, a BRIEF NOTE: we'll be exploring the themes in Miller's play through the context of modern/ historical implications of hysteria, panic, call-out culture, and, for this connection especially, THE RED SCARE panics that hit the US in both the early and mid 20th century

  • Keep above and the play you are completing in mind, and VIEW THE FOLLOWING SHORT VIDEO:
Short History of The Red Scare

  • Use your preferred search engine to CHOOSE A POLITICAL CARTOON WITH A HISTORICAL CONTEXT, TIME FRAME, AND THEME RELATED TO THE FOLLOWING (*key words for your search, for example):
    • Red Scare political cartoon (*WWI era)
    • McCarthyism political cartoon (post-WWII era/the 1960s)
    • **Add "US" or "United States" to your search key words if you want even further results
  • ALSO, REMEMBER: MONDAY IN CLASS FOR A 100% or ZERO GRADE, I'LL LOOK FOR YOUR CHOSEN RED SCARE/McCARTHYISM POLITICAL CARTOON and we'll get these printed out; you'll then be given THE POLITICAL CARTOON ANALYSIS SHEET that you'll complete for a SIGNIFICANT GRADE

3) FINALLY, BY CLASSTIME MON. 2/7, MAKE SURE YOU'VE COMPLETELY READ THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE/ESSAY (*given to you in class Thurs. 2/3, linked below, AND linked on the Classroom as well):

  • AND IMPORTANT: After reading this essay from Miller, please be aware that your FINAL GRADE WRITING ASSIGNMENT for The Crucible will be heavily pulled from your understanding of this essay as well as your UPCOMING POLITICAL CARTOON analysis assignment

***SOOOOO, TO RECAP WHAT NEEDS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED BY MON. 2/7:
  • MON. 2/7 have your The Crucible ACT 4 ASSIGNED/INDIVIDUALLY-COMPLETED x5 qu's completed if you don't finish in class Thurs. 2/3
  • This wkend search and pick out a RED SCARE/McCARTHYISM POLITICAL CARTOON THAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE UNDERSTANDING/ANALYZING/**TYING TO THE CRUCIBLE AS WELL**; IF YOU HAVE NOT YET, be ready to SHOW IT TO ME PRINTED MON. 2/7 **OR** EMAIL TO ME BEFORE MON. 2/7 so I can print it!
  • And before class MON. 2/7 make sure you've read Miller's article/essay "Why I Wrote The Crucible" and be aware that this article PLUS your political cartoon make up a SIGNIFICANT PART of the next major assignments you'll be completing this coming week as we finish up the play; in other words: THESE GRADES ARE MAJOR.
