**ATTENTION 1st/2nd AP/1101 ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS/FYI FOR FALL BREAK and WHAT TO EXPECT IN CLASS MON. 10/18**

1st/2nd AP LANG/ENG 1101

ATTENTION ALL FOR MON. 10/18, the day we return from fall break:

1) Over your break, FIRST make sure you throroughly read/study/understand the FOUR (4) quotes on the sheet given to you in class Thurs. 10/7 (JOURNALS section of binder/quotes copied below/also linked on the Classroom):

2) When you return from break on MON. 10/18, you will all be completing JOURNAL #4 IN CLASS to turn in RE: these quotes

3) You will be *officially* be given your J#4 topic/prompt and instructions RE: Eisenhower's quotes in class Mon. 10/18. However, to get you thinking between now and then, I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU LOOK AT (perhaps make note of???) SOME OF THE FOLLOWING HELPFUL WRITING SUGGESTIONS:
  • Choose TWO (2) of the FOUR (4) quotes on the sheet given to you in class today from [General and] President Dwight D. Eisenhower (and copied below) and discuss your "take" on each
  • compare the two quotes and their 'take' on war
  • research the DATE/CONTEXT of each quote and Eisenhower's varying perspectives of war
  • DEFEND/CHALLENGE/QUALIFY each one, etc.

FOUR QUOTES FROM DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER:

"When people speak to you about a preventive war, you tell them to go and fight it. After my experience, I have come to hate war."

"I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its stupidity. War settles nothing."

"Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels - men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion."

"If all that Americans want is security, they can go to prison. They’ll have enough to eat, a bed and a roof over their heads. But if an American wants to preserve his dignity and his equality as a human being, he must not bow his neck to any dictatorial government."

SO, TO RECAP YOUR TASK FOR FALL BREAK/PRIOR TO CLASS MON. 10/18:
