ALL, REMINDER AGAIN FOR BOTH AP LANG/1102 TUES. 3/3 (*and TUES. 3/3 for those in 1102 only--NO LATE WORK AND PLEASE DO YOUR BEST ON THIS AS IT IS FOR A SNOW DAY #5-6 AP/1102 GRADE!*):
  • in class tomorrow, GRADED DISCUSSION for the *CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT PHOTO BELOW taken in ALABAMA 1963 and COMPLETE AN OPTIC VISUAL ANALYSIS OF THE PHOTO (*if you needed a paper copy I passed them out MON. 3/2 and I can give more out TUES. 3/3)
--Via Google Images, 27 Feb. 2020. Associated Press photographer Bill Hudson captured this image of Parker High School student Walter Gadsden in Birmingham, AL, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement; the photo was published in The New York Times on May 4, 1963.
  • ANNOTATE/MAKE NOTES on a sheet of paper for the image(s) [or print your own; otherwise Monday one provided to you] and APPLY the O.P.T.I.C. ANALYSIS STRATEGY for VISUAL RHETORIC LINKED HERE AS WELL as a reminder/notes for VISUAL RHETORIC analysis
    • Once again, note what stands out rhetorically? What's missing? What's present? What do you *assume* based upon this photo? What appeals are present? Body language? Overall themes presented? Connotations based upon the context/time period?
    • ALSO, TWO PRO-TIPS BECAUSE Y'ALL ARE HONORS/COLLEGE STUDENTS AND ALL, AND YOU *SHOULD* ALREADY BE DOING THIS STUFF:
      • 1)**IMPORTANT HISTORICAL CONTEXT/TIE-IN: Google Images of “The Foot Soldier of Birmingham” statue in Birmingham created to capture this moment in history; **we’ll be tying this all together Monday in class!
      • 2) Some of you have barely 'skimmed' the surface of effort on these OPTIC VISUAL RHETORIC ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENTS, so since this is the THIRD ONE we've completed, I'M TAKING THIS ONE to assess; I'LL APPLY my own assessment of how you do, so BEST EFFORT PLEASE! :-)
  • **NOTE: this piece of visual rhetoric will be accompanied by an important PODCAST following discussion and our analysis/discussion will become the basis for a JOURNAL RESPONSE (**more info TBA in class TUES. 3/3)

4th Pre-AP American Lit./Comp.

**NO HW DUE TUES. 3/3**

**ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WEEK IS THE 'HALFWAY MARK' FOR THE UCHS SEMESTER--WEEK 9!!!
  • MORE INFO COMING TOMORROW AS I PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR UPCOMING MAJOR MIDTERM QUIZ--stay tuned!
***************
AND AS I'VE BEEN SAYING FOR WEEKS NOW, PLEASE BRING YOUR COPY OF F451 WITH YOU TO CLASS EVERY DAY!
  • FYI we have one more section of the book to focus on as we finish up discussing the characteristics of DYSTOPIAN SOCIETIES (TBA), then I'll be getting these back from you
