**************

HW DUE/**READY TO DISCUSS IN CLASS TUES. 2/21:

1) Make sure, IF YOU HAVE NOT, that you've all finished up and read BOTH the following in Arthur Miller's play The Crucible:
  • ACT FOUR
    • **BOTH 1st/2nd block: read from wherever we finished reading in class in ACT 4 to the END OF THE ACT
  • "Echoes Down the Corridor"
    • **last page after ACT 4 ends

2) AND PLEASE, ALL: over this LONG WEEKEND and BY CLASSTIME TUES. 2/21, ANSWER THE ACT 4 QU's BELOW as you have the previous three acts as JOURNAL #15

ACT FOUR:
  1. How much time has passed between Acts III and IV?
  2. What problems are occurring in Salem now that so many people are in the jails?
  3. Hathorne states, “At every execution I have seen naught but high satisfaction in the town” (127; 117). What is your reaction to this statement/what does the judge infer here about people's reactions to their judgments?
  4. Why does Parris think there may be a riot in Salem? What does he ask Danforth to do to prevent this, and what is Danforth's answer? Why?
  5. How many people have now confessed?
  6. What happens to Giles Corey? Why? What does he say as he died?
  7. Proctor tells Elizabeth he is considering confessing. Why is he considering this? Find/cite a "quote/piece of text evidence" to support your answer.
  8. How does Proctor feel when he sees Rebecca Nurse? What is it about Rebecca’s character that prompts him to feel this way?
  9. In the midst of John Proctor's confession, he refuses to name other people. Explain why he refuses to do this. What might this say about his character?
  10. Proctor ends “God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are!” (142; 132). Explain how this line has two different meanings [what Proctor means by it versus what Danforth takes it to mean].

**AGAIN, our FINAL DISCUSSION NEXT WEEK in class for ACT FOUR **AS WELL AS THE PLAY IN ITS ENTIRETY AS WE TRANSITION TO TYING IN MILLER'S WARNINGS ABOUT McCARTHYISM/THE RED SCARE** will be guided by these x10 JOURNAL #15 ACT 4 qu's, so DO YOUR BEST!
