3rd Honors American Lit./Comp.

**IMPORTANT MAJOR WRITING HW DUE MON. 10/31:

As discussed/detailed here and in class FRI. 10/28, make sure by the time class starts you have YOUR **COMPLETED ROUGH DRAFT** of the AP-STYLE LITERARY ANALYSIS FOUR-PARAGRAPH ESSAY for the short story "The Pedestrian"

**HERE IS YOUR WRITING PROMPT FOR THIS ESSAY RESPONSE:

Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" illustrates the THEME that TECHNOLOGY CAN ISOLATE PEOPLE AND INHIBIT THE SHARING OF THOUGHTS, IDEAS, AND EMOTIONS. Write an organized FOUR-PARAGRAPH essay that ANALYZES TWO SPECIFIC LITERARY DEVICES Bradbury uses in his short story to convey this theme.

CHECKLIST FOR COMPLETED ROUGH DRAFT DUE MON. 10/31 **either TYPED or WRITTEN NEATLY/COMPLETELY**:

__ UNDERSTAND THE PROMPT. Audience? Purpose(s)? Context? Do you 'get' each of these and what you're being asked to do in this response??
__Choose the TWO SPECIFIC LIT. DEVICES you'll be using as the basis for your analysis of Bradbury's text (**USE YOUR HIGHLIGHTED COPY OF THE SHORT STORY "THE PEDESTRIAN" FROM CLASS NOTES/DISCUSSION TO GUIDE YOU!!):
  • a ___ tone [*NOTES on your story from class discussion]
  • ___ imagery [*be VERY specific here on the TYPE of IMAGERY based on your notes/highlights from class!!]
  • *antithesis [*definition of term/device in your NOTES from class discussion/highlights in your story of specific examples of this term]
  • symbolism [notes RE: Mead/symbols in the story]
  • **repetition [*NOTES/highlights on your story from class discussion; **YOU CAN ONLY USE REPETITION as ONE of your DEVICES--not TWO difference instances of repetition; for example: the repetition of "one" and the repetition of "empty"--choose either/or]

__HANDWRITTEN or TYPED DRAFT--either is fine

__ RESPOND TO THE PROMPT IN FOUR PARAGRAPHS:
  1. INTRO PARA. (3-4 sent.) with author/text, *with THESIS/CLAIM as LAST SENTENCE of this paragraph*
  2. BODY PARA. analyzing LIT. DEVICE #1 in the text/tie to theme (6-8 sent.)
  3. BODY PARA. analyzing LIT. DEVICE #2 in the text/tie to theme (6-8 sent.)
  4. CONCLUSION PARA tying all BACK to your thesis/claim in the intro (3-4 sent.)

__ Incorporate IN EACH BODY PARAGRAPH AT LEAST ONE "significant BLENDED quote/piece of text evidence" from the text to illustrate/add to your analysis of the TWO LIT. TERMS YOU CHOSE from Bradbury's short story and theme and use the correct in-text citation (Bradbury).
__ AVOID 1st or 2nd person pronouns
__Write about this text in PRESENT TENSE!
__ Be careful to avoid using EVALUATION statements--don't 'judge' with your response, just ANALYZE THE TEXT and how it shows the THEME!
__ LIMIT the use of PASSIVE VOICE ('be' verbs)--use STRONG ACTION VERBS whenever possible
__ USE EFFECTIVE TRANSITIONS, PLEASE!
__Make sure you provide an effective CONCLUSION to your response and tie back to the THEME!
__ As usual, check for LETTER-GRADE ERRORS [CS/FRAG/RO] and misc. proofreading issues that may distract from your ideas or analysis
