1) Read E.P. Jones' short story [SUPPLEMENTAL SECTION OF BINDER/paper copy given to you in class FRI. 8/9], "The First Day" and:
  • ANNOTATE/MARK/HIGHLIGHT/COMMENT specific references within the story that apply the rhetorical elements of ETHOS, PATHOS, or LOGOS

  • Read O'Brien's The Things They Carried (TTTC) through pp. 58 
    • includes the chapters/vignettes "The Things They Carried," "Love," "Spin," and "On the Rainy River" 

**READING REMINDERS FOR DISCUSSION MONDAY: 
O'Brien's intriguing FICTION text that explores the realities that coincide with war and our perhaps misguided perceptions of the complex issues surrounding combat versus civilian life; read The Things They Carried with the following concepts in mind:

  • take into account the author’s [O’Brien’s] purpose and context
  • recognize strategies and tactics employed to broaden the civilian understanding of the atrocities of war and to explain current societal issues associated with the subject
  • understand the myriad of ethical dilemmas associated with war and different perceptions of TRUTH and reality that arise within the text

1) In the WRITING SECTION of your binder as JOURNAL #1, complete ONE 150-200 word written [*typed is fine; just HAVE A HARD COPY w/you!] response to ALL THREE QUESTIONS BELOW 
--from our reading/discussion today in class, use Conroy’s comments from Lords of Discipline about his ‘GREAT TEACHER THEORY’ as the ‘inspiration’/guide for your own response to these qu's:
  • What qualities, in your opinion, make a GREAT TEACHER?
  • Think back over the teachers you’ve had through your years in school. How do we measure up in your eyes academically, personally/supportively, and in any other way?  
  • Finally, choose ONE of the THREE main 'chunks'/sections of CONROY'S EXCERPT and briefly explain which section appeals to you the most, AND WHY. 

**JOURNAL REMINDERS:

  • In the novel/novella Fahrenheit 451, make sure you've read PART I ("The Hearth and the Salamander") THROUGH pp. 38 [*top of the page; ends with "...we turn for the firehouse" (38).] 
    • be ready for discussion of what you've read Monday, and bring questions you may have about the plot and characters
    • **SUGGESTION AS YOU READ: use your CLASS NOTES from Friday's Ted Ed video "How To Recognize a Dystopia" to look for specific instances/plot points/themes in the novel that mirror dystopian characteristics
    • BRING YOUR COPY OF F451 TO CLASS EVERY DAY!
