HAVE A FABULOUS SPRING BREAK! **HW READINGS DUE MON. 4/17**

TAKE YOUR COPY OF ONE HUNDRED GREAT ESSAYS (OGE) WITH YOU OVER THE BREAK; BASICALLY, IF YOU FORGET IT, YOU'RE SCREWED.  

1) NOW: BEFORE CLASS MON. 4/17, make sure you've carefully read the following THREE (3) TEXTS assigned from OGE for the break (*and use the included Philosophy Bro links below to help with understanding of the last two political/philosophical texts assigned!):

-Freud from Interpretation of Dreams
-Machiavelli Philosophy Bro on The Morals of the Prince
-Plato Philosophy Bro on "Allegory of the Cave" 
2) FIRST THING IN CLASS MON. 4/17, everyone present will be given ONE 'RANDOM' WRITTEN DISCUSSION QUESTION FOR JOURNAL #13 to answer in class FROM ONE of these THREE authors you are to read during this break

**READ THE TEXTS. Then, be prepared, and be back here Mon. 4/17 for the LAST FOUR WEEKS OF THE SEMESTER, and for a 'randomly-chosen' in-class GRADED response to one of these three texts!

1)  Over the break, carefully complete a CLOSE READING of the following TWO SHORT STORIES from our upcoming study of AMERICAN REALISM and NATURALISM (*NOTES section/given to you in class before leaving for spring break/**ALSO LINKED BELOW**):

"Story of an Hour" -Kate Chopin and AMERICAN REALISM

"The Law of Life" -Jack London and AMERICAN NATURALISM 

2) After CLOSELY reading both texts, use your "American Literature Timeline" reference handout with the highlights/NOTES we took Thursday/Friday in class to:

--INCLUDE/MAKE NOTE OF for EACH STORY FIVE (5) KEY and SUBSTANTIAL ANNOTATIONS ON/FOR EACH STORY 
**these FIVE for each annotations can be highlights, BUT THEY MUST ALSO INCLUDE A SHORT WRITTEN EXPLANATION
**tie each annotation to the story's THEME and/or to HOW the story fits into its particular ERA of AMERICAN LITERATURE/LITERARY GENRES

**IN SUMMATION: When your READING AND ANNOTATIONS are complete for this assignment you will have:
--read TWO short stories
--made FIVE (5) substantial annotations for/on EACH text  for a TOTAL OF TEN (10) ANNOTATIONS

**YOU CAN ALSO EXPECT SOME SORT OF READING QUIZ/CHECK MONDAY 4/17 WHEN WE RETURN FROM BREAK, AND THIS CLOSE READING/ANNOTATIONS ASSIGNMENT WILL ALSO BE FOR A GRADED DISCUSSION GRADE MON. 10/24!
