HOMEWORK DUE MONDAY, AUGUST 12

HW DUE MON. 8/12:

 COMPLETE a 300 to 400+-word ROUGH DRAFT (fully complete, typed or written/follow MLA style as shown on the sample sheet given to you for practice) version of REFLECTIVE PERSONAL ESSAY #1 outlined in class today (and below):

 
How have you changed since 9th grade?  Consider academic habits, personal goals, relationships, traits you value in friends, family life, how you spend your free time, important lessons you've learned since then.  

WRITING GUIDELINES/CHECKLIST FOR YOUR GRADE
:
__include ONE favorite quote, song lyric, aphorism/saying, cliche, etc. in your essay and we will formally cite this reference MLA-style if necessary

__use the two personal essay models given to you in class as a 'guide' for your writing

__1st-person singular (or plural); be honest and open, yet keep your tone/voice semi-formal

__use multi-paragraphs to help your writing flow/stay organized

__keep PASSIVE VOICE to a minimum ('70-30 rule')

JOURNAL #1: IN WRITING SECTION OF BINDER, ANSWER THE FOLLOWING PROMPT (IN AT LEAST 8-10 sentences, and for now, pencil is fine for this draft/WE WILL REVISE/REWRITE FORMALLY LATER)

JOURNAL #1: Your brother/sister is entering 8th grade. You just completed middle school. Write him/her a letter explaining how to succeed in middle school.   

**CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING APPROACHES TO THIS LETTER (choose 2 or 3+):
- Advice about remembering people who are important to you (family, friends, youth group, etc.) 
- Advice about friends, academics, sports, drama, etc.
- Funniest moments and biggest frustrations from middle school/your 8th grade year to show lessons you learned
- Class, friend, teacher, staff member that impacted you the most in middle school/your 8th grade year (good or bad); NO 'BASHING,' PLEASE!
- Explain some situations you are proud you stood up for yourself in and the lessons your brother/sister could learn from these

CHECKLIST FOR COMPLETION:
___starts with “Dear _____;”/ends with a ‘closing’ and your signature
___8-10 sentences
___can be divided into 2-3 paragraphs
___pen or pencil is fine; WILL REVISE LATER (part of a BIGGER PROJECT WE WILL COMPLETE; *MORE ON THAT TBA!!)
___proofread/revise as you go; we will properly format for letter format, etc. soon in class!
